Michigan property taxes vary from one township to another based on millages assessed. Some townships may have more school millages. Some may have extra millages to pay for fire and police protection, or to pay for parks or roads.
For residents who have owned in Michigan for a long time, there are tax advantages that new buyers will not have the first year. In some cases the new buyers will not qualify for the same exemptions.
I always take the time to review this with my buyers so they can make informed decisions on how much they can afford based on the extra yearly costs that go with home ownership.
The Michigan Treasury website has a tax estimator that is helpful to get an idea of what your property taxes might be. It is usually a little out of date and may not be exact for current year. More updated millage rates can be found locally and as your agent I will be happy to help in obtaining the current rates.
